The novel and the plays in question have inspired numerous film adaptations over the years. Besides the incomparable silent original with Lon Chaney, one of the most popular versions is the Joel Schumacher musical from 2004. It was the inspiration for this pokie, both visually and musically, which gave it a great dose of authenticity.
The game had an excellent soundtrack, although I would have preferred the classic Iron Maiden song from their debut album. The three different bonus variants were a beautiful idea, giving the slot a touch of versatility. Games Global, which used to be Microgaming, has continuously developed immersive games, putting players in the middle of the action.
The game drew me in quickly, delivering a thoroughly entertaining experience from start to finish. The medium volatility guaranteed a good balance between risk and reward without too many chills, but it was pretty thrilling.
Even though all the elements were mostly familiar, the provider still managed to surprise me with a thing or two. This time, those were the combinations of multipliers, free spins and hidden cash prizes among the bonus variants. They gave me several excellent payouts, but life-changing wins were reserved for someone else.
If I had to look for something I did not like, it would be a narrow betting scope. It is not too challenging for high rollers, making the game more tailored to casual players’ needs. Despite the medium variance, I also experienced some streaks of dead spins.
The action occurs on a 5×3 playing area across 243 paylines, which gives you a lot of winning combinations. I grabbed many decent wins, but few of them could be called big ones, an expected outcome in this type of game. Still, I had a great time reminiscing about the solid film by Schumacher.
A Phantom is the most lucrative symbol in the game, granting 8x the stake for 5 icons on a payline. Christine pays 7x for the same combination, while Raoul and Carlotta award 6x and 5x the bet, respectively. Logo Wilds replace regular symbols in winning combinations, granting 10x the stake for a full line. They can be double-stacked in the base game.
Mask Scatters activate the Bonus Selection round, paying 100x the stake for 5 icons. The lowest bet stands at $0.30, while you can place the maximum amount of $37.50. With the maximum win of 7,773x the stake, you can play for over $290,000. I could not grab it, but you might be lucky.
The Phantom of the Opera has 2 base game features, and the Bonus round with 3 options. Landing 3 Scatters will have you choose between Music of the Night, Masquerade Pick and All I Ask of You Bonus. I liked everything the game offered, although I did not snatch hefty payouts.
They include the Chandelier Bonus and the Letter Bonus. I have never seen the first one, which turns 2 to 3 reels into Wilds. The letter symbol appears on the last reel and awards the cash prize of up to 20x the stake. Although I scooped a couple of letters, I never grabbed the maximum amount.
When I chose this feature, I received 10 free spins, with a Phantom Feature active on each spin. Those can be 5 random Wilds, up to 3 Wild Reels, 2 to 5 extra spins, or a 2x to 4x multiplier.
Players unveil cash prizes by picking masks, and you can win more picks and level-ups in the process. I never got past the first level, though.
This feature provides 10 spins, but Christina and Raoul become Wild during the round, dancing above the reels. They move to adjacent positions, granting a 3x multiplier if they land on the same place. Moreover, if they hit the same reel, it becomes Wild, and if they are next to each other, it applies to both reels. Unfortunately, I had no luck to experience this feature’s assets.
The Phantom of the Opera will continue to inspire people all over the world. This game is an excellent take on the famous musical that brings enormous fun.
I enjoyed all the features immensely and was completely immersed in the tragic love story.
However, I have a bone to pick with the developers regarding the narrow betting range. The high roller in me was not satisfied, but bearing in mind my luck while playing, it was better that way. I had a good time and would like to return to the theatre soon.
