Egyptian-themed slots are a safe bet nowadays in the iGaming industry, with providers often creating them when stuck. Some suppliers made excellent franchises, others had one-hit wonders, while the rest made generic pokies. I am sorry to say Sun of Egypt belongs to the last category.
However, it does not mean I did not have a good time playing it. On the contrary, I had some great sessions, even grabbing the Mini Jackpot prize in the process. Granted, some dead spins were there, too, but I had many exciting rounds while on the edge of my seat.
It was clear what I could expect regarding the gameplay after a few spins. With the decent but unoriginal base game, the main goal was to trigger one of the two bonus features. 3 Oaks spiced things up a bit in those rounds, but I was not swept off my feet.
It looks as if Sun of Egypt developers were happy to create an average game. They were OK in their comfort zone with a couple of familiar features, not going too far. However, they did not step up when the game should have offered better numbers and bigger excitement. Still, some players will like it precisely for what it is, but I am not the one.
Heaps of little flaws exist, but the glaring ones include the low RTP and the low maximum win. It seems impossible to win substantial amounts of money, or at least it was like that with me. Sun of Egypt has its qualities, but the drawbacks make it mediocre.
The action occurs on a standard playing area with 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 paylines. The medium-to-high variance indicates considerable wins that do not come too often. I received a few hefty payouts, including the Mini Jackpot, but it was nothing too thrilling.
A golden mask is the most lucrative symbol in the paytable, granting 10x the stake for a full line of 5. Other premium symbols include an ankh, an eye of Horus, and a crown, awarding 8x, 6x, and 4x for 5, respectively. Wilds replace regulars in winning combos, while Scatters trigger the Free Spins round.
I got the ball rolling for only $0.25. The maximum bet you can place is $60. The scope is pretty broad and attractive, but a low maximum win can make or break a game. I would not say the top win of 1,000x the stake broke Sun of Egypt, but it could have been much better.
Sun of Egypt has a Hold&Win bonus round with jackpot prizes and a Free Spins round with high-pay symbols. Both are excellent, even though the numbers are low.
Sun Bonus Scatters trigger the Hold&Win Bonus when 6 such symbols hit the reels. The triggering symbols remain locked while the rest of the reels respins 3 times, resetting the tally each time another symbol lands. The round ends once you run out of respins or fill all the positions.
Two jackpot prizes, Mini and Major, are connected to the special Jackpot Sun symbols. I landed the Mini prize of 30x, while the Major one is worth 150x. Despite a few good rounds, I didn’t fill the entire grid needed for the Grand Jackpot of 1,000x.
If 3 Vase Scatters hit the reels, they trigger 8 free spins with potential retriggers. I was delighted when I discovered the playing card icons were removed during the round. Their disappearance made it easier for me to grab more handsome wins and trigger the Hold&Win round.
Sun of Egypt is a perfectly serviceable game if you know what to expect from it. It is another Egyptian-themed pokie with a great audio-visual presentation, decent features and mediocre wins. I like games like that, and I enjoyed myself, at least for a while.
However, many things could and should have been better, from a mediocre maximum win to a low RTP value. I have seen so many similar slots that it killed the fun in the long run for me. If you want the best Egyptian experience, check out the games from the Book of Dead series. All things considered, I rate Sun of Egypt 5.8 out of 10.
