Peaky Blinders represents the first-ever branded pokie from Pragmatic Play, and it was not an easy task for them. When the basis for the game is something so popular, it is always challenging to be up to the task. As a fan of the series, I was happy with the result, although it was far from a perfect game.
While the pokie looked good, and it felt good to play, I thought the studio played it a bit too safe. The aficionados will recognise many details in the game, but I am not sure it has enough ammo to appeal to those who do not adore the series.
It is clear the team has put a lot of effort into the design, from the photorealistic images to the famous Birmingham setting. The Nick-Cave-styled soundtrack completed the action, reminding me of its own greatness. The gameplay was dynamic and fast-paced, but not all its elements were great enough for this game.
I thought it was a nice touch to be able to hear some of the dialogue from the series, too. Parts of it were not particularly original, but it was a wild ride nevertheless. Pragmatic Play looked to add a touch of its own through the unusual features, and they were not too shabby.
Still, I have to mention a couple of drawbacks, too. It has a low maximum win and should not have been so safe. The audio-visual presentation was the best part of the game, and its characters and fans deserved better gameplay.
The action occurs on a 5×3 playing area with 20 fixed paylines, where 3 to 5 identical symbols on a payline bring wins. The pokie has medium-to-high volatility, promising considerable but rare wins. If you love the TV series, it will keep you on the edge of your seat, despite the fact you have seen it all already.
The members of the Shelby family are the premium symbols in the game, with Tommy being the most lucrative. It grants 20x the stake for 5 on a line, while Arthur, Polly, and Michael award 15x, 7.50x, and 5x the bet for the same. Wilds replace regular symbols in winning combinations, while various Scatters trigger the corresponding features.
I started playing with $0.20, while the highest potential bet was $100. With the maximum win of 2,022x the stake, the amount to play for is $202,200.
They include The Shelby Betting Shop feature, By the Order of the Peaky Blinders feature, and the Free Spins round. Activating them got me some handsome payouts, but the massive wins eluded me in the end, as usual.
Landing a Shelby Betting Shop Scatter on reel 5 activates the feature, paying out a cash amount for all premium symbols in view. All amounts are combined for a total payout.
Land the corresponding symbol on reel 5 for the premium symbol in view to remain locked on the grid. A respin follows, transforming premium icons into the same symbol for the new payouts.
Shelby Betting Shop Spins awards 8 spins, adding more corresponding Scatters to reel 5. The same goes for By the Order of the Peaky Blinders Spins but with 10 spins. Neither round can be retriggered.
This TV series deserved to have its own game, and Pragmatic Play stepped up to the challenge. The atmosphere is excellent, and the audio-visual presentation is terrific, with the characters we all know and love.
The late great Helen McCrory lives on as Polly Shelby, and it was great to see her here. The features are not bad, but they lacked originality and the sharpness of the series.
I expected a better maximum win and more attractive gameplay despite the fact it has certain versatility. As if the provider was afraid to make the gangsters too appealing and exciting, every move the studio made was on the safe side.
Many TV shows make mistakes by glorifying their anti-heroes, but the fans still deserve a better game. If you want a phenomenal TV show-based game that ticks all the boxes, check out Vikings by NetEnt.
