Madder Scientist offered a lot of old-fashioned fun but did not get carried away. The design was excellent, especially for a 2013 game, and I was immersed in the atmosphere from the start. After the initial loading screen, a cutscene introduced the story, and the game immediately drew me in. It took 20 seconds to get me hooked, and I grabbed a few wins at the beginning, instantly making me stoked.
It had a lot of exciting features that made the game interesting for long periods of time. With a hit rate of 49.17%, nearly every other spin should be a winning one, and I grabbed plenty of payouts indeed. However, they were not particularly notable, even on more substantial bets.
A mad scientist as an anti-hero is not a new concept, but this series was one of the first times when their plans actually worked. The second part has Walter Prescott even more intoxicated with success, consequently making me more absorbed in the game.
A set of diverse features spiced the game up, and they appeared regularly, which does not happen often. My eyes were glued to the screen, and my wins came often, which was a nice change compared to most other pokies. I found many things in this game quite amazing.
However, I was hacked off by a few things that prevented it from being a masterpiece. Madder Scientist was crippled by its ridiculously low maximum win and a low RTP. Despite those disadvantages, I would like to return to the lab and enjoy myself some more.
The action plays out on a standard 5×3 playing area across 30 paylines, where landing 3 to 5 identical symbols means a win. Medium-variance slots usually indicate decent payouts at decent intervals, balancing risk and reward. I did not win much money, but it was fun.
The most lucrative regular icons include Prescott himself and his beautiful assistant, granting 16.67x the stake for a line of five. A rabbit is another prominent symbol, paying 13.33x the bet for 5 icons. Beakers and switches activate features, with carrots triggering the bonus round.
I started playing with the lowest bet of $0.10 and finished with the highest wager of $450. The mediocre maximum win of 218.83x means the amount to go for is about $98,500, which is astonishingly low. Luckily, I liked the game since money was not my primary concern.
Various features enhance the gameplay, including Beaker Click Me, Wild Switches, Reel Respin and Test the Serum. Each of them brought something new, but massive payouts did not come.
I managed to get 3 beaker symbols on the odd-numbered reels and trigger the pick-and-click feature. Selecting a beaker revealed the prize, and I repeated the procedure until the word “Collect “turned up. I landed 2 cash prizes and some free spins.
If 3 switch symbols hit the reels, the Wild Switches feature activates, with a random reel turning Wild for a set of spins. Multiple opportunities for hefty wins arise. Unfortunately, I never activated this feature.
After every spin, you can choose a reel to respin for an extra chance to win. It is an excellent opportunity to grab new payouts, but the respin is not free. I tried it a couple of times, but it only brought me a few wins.
This feature made me a scientist, too. Upon landing 3 carrots, the bonus round is triggered, and I chose 2 beakers with a coloured liquid. Each of them carried a different money prize, and the doctor poured the mix on a carrot. When the experiment was over, I got extra cash based on the outcome. My concoction was not jaw-dropping, but the payout was decent.
Madder Scientist is a good pokie, especially considering its age. It has heaps of charm and provides moments of sheer fun while you explore its features.
Several innovative touches from Betsoft make the game great, reminding everyone the studio has always known how to please its players. The features and a phenomenal hit rate add a unique flavour to this title.
On the other hand, the game was hampered by its measly maximum win of less than $100,000 on max stake. It will turn off many high rollers for a good reason.
The low RTP also does not do the game any favours. I still think Madder Scientist has a lot to say, but it could have been better.
