I always appreciate pokies that borrow ideas from multiple sources for their graphics. Fairy Dust doesn’t just draw inspiration from popular characters like Tinker Bell. You can see that looking at the backdrop, where a happy faerie dragon cheers you on as you spin the reels.
That said, the background image is simple compared to other Atomic Slot Lab games.
One thing the developer does that I like is changing the backdrop. The purplish sky and slightly darker colours make the background image look much more intriguing and mysterious.
Regular paying symbols are a mix of playing card royals and theme-appropriate icons. The latter includes nuts, berries, mushrooms, butterflies, owls, and faeries.
I like the design of special symbols much more. Green gemstones are Wilds, while faerie dragons and magic bags are bonus icons. You’ll also see plenty of colourful orbs above the middle three reels, which you’ll need to claim various features.
For the most part, the playing area Fairy Dust uses is straightforward. The game uses five reels and four rows in a 4-3-3-3-4 layout. Instead of paylines, the pokie comes with 432 ways to win.
Personally, I prefer using ways to win because it is simpler to form wins with this system. Wins must have three or more identical symbols in adjacent reels while starting with the leftmost reel. Wagers start at $0.20 and can go up to $100 per round. The slot has a medium variance and a top prize of 4,436x your stake. Fairy Dust’s RTP is 96.32%.
While the features available in this game will be familiar to most players, the way you unlock them is novel. Instead of chasing bonus symbols, you must take advantage of the Orbs that appear above reels two, three, and four.
Bonuses you can benefit from include Wilds, cash prizes, free spins, and fixed jackpots. My favourite is the free spins feature, as it gives you the best chance of landing big wins.
Wilds can appear anywhere in the playing area. They can replace any symbol on the reels except for faerie dragons and magic bags.
Various orbs appear over the middle three reels every round. However, their attached features and cash prizes remain out of reach until bonus symbols appear.
Faerie dragons appearing on reels one and five simultaneously are prerequisites for triggering any Orb features. Additionally, a magic bag must land on reels two, three, or four to unlock the orb present above that reel.
The green question mark orb is a Mystery Orb. If awarded, it will transform into one of the other possible orbs.
Orange orbs display cash prizes on the icon whose value can range between 5x to 200x your stake. The displayed value is added to your total balance.
Blue orbs are Free Spins Orbs. They show you how many free spins you’ll get if it’s triggered, ranging from 8 to 100 spins.
Finally, purple orbs are Jackpot Orbs. These will grant one of three fixed jackpots, depending on which one is displayed on the orb. The jackpots have the following rewards:
Finally, every spin has a chance to unlock a random orb, even if players don’t get the required bonus symbols.
When free spins begin, players are guaranteed to get at least one random orb. Additionally, between four and nine Wilds can be added randomly on reels two, three, and four during the feature. Both bonuses ensure the Free Spins feature has an improved chance of winning compared to the base game.
Unfortunately, you cannot retrigger the bonus. Once the free spins run out, the feature ends.
Fairy Dust won’t blow your mind with its features. They’re fun, but you’ll have seen them all before.
Activating them using orbs is an entertaining twist, which ended up winning me over. The fact you can win a thrilling jackpot is just a cherry on top.
I like the graphics, for the most part. Most of the symbol designs are cool, drawing inspiration from all kinds of fairy stories.
However, the background image doesn’t do it for me. You can barely see any of it due to the reels, making it less immersive than what other games offer.
I understand Atomic Slot Lab strives for a specific look, but it’s not to my taste. Your mileage may vary.
Despite some qualms, I enjoyed the Fairy Dust pokie a fair bit. I rate it 7.4.
