Blueprint Gaming designed the game brilliantly, drawing you into the iconic film world from the start. The animations are wicked, and the sound effects are irreplaceable. Branded pokies are always difficult to transfer, but this release looks and feels familiar, which is always a treat.
The developers found a way to put a plethora of modifiers into one game without making it look too ambitious. So many various assets might have startled me initially, but as time went by, I felt more and more at home.
Despite the medium volatility, I had the impression something important was happening all the time. With so many modifiers, I had to remain alert but cautious. However, I could not help but enjoy every minute with so many faces from my childhood.
It turned out The Goonies Return was precisely what I was looking for. A tremendously entertaining game with intelligent gameplay created for film fans made me happy, and it was more than I could ask for. Payouts were OK, but the feeling was priceless.
However, it has one or two small drawbacks, starting from the low RTP of 95.50%. The other is the maximum exposure of $250,000 if we know the maximum multiplier is 50,000x the stake. Still, I enjoyed the game and will return to it soon.
The iconic adventure occurs on a usual-looking grid with 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 lines. It did not take me long to see the first activated feature, but some dead spins were there, too. Gameplay-wise, the title is so rich one can never get bored.
Skull and crossbones icon is the most valuable, awarding 25x the stake for a combination of five. The four mentioned Goonies are worth 10x – 15x the bet, while Wilds replace regular icons in winning combinations. Of course, bonus symbols trigger various rounds.
The medium volatility means risk and reward are well-balanced. Despite the adventure, you will not see many chills and thrills, which may be better. The maximum exposure stands at £250,000, although the win is advertised to be 50,000x, which is not.
The game has 6 One-Eyed Willy modifiers and 4 modifiers that turn a losing spin into a winning one. There are also 6 bonus features, each with its own ingredients and flavour.
They can activate on any base game spin, and when they do, players get to choose one of the three keys. Upon selecting, one of the 6 following modifiers hits:
Random modifiers include the Scythe, Shooting Spikes, Dynamite, and Cave Collapse. The first resets the reels to create a win, the second removes columns to do the same, and the third upgrades the win. Finally, the fourth removes the symbols, causing a cascade of new icons.
Landing 3 bonus symbols activates the feature, and I spun the wheel to win some of the bonuses. During my test run, I hit 2 of 6.
Some extras also have the Gamble feature, where you can win features, a Mystery Prize Win or the Exchange. The latter allows you to gamble for better features if you win 15x or more.
The Goonies Return fulfilled all my expectations, allowing me to return to the 1980s and enjoy myself without seeing the film for 15 years.
You can see that the fans developed the game with love, and the gameplay, with all the features and bonuses, is among the most innovative I have seen. For my money, this is a sequel done right, and the game is on par with the original.
On the other hand, the RTP goes below the industry standard, which is a shame for a game that provides heaps of fun.
With all the bonus features and the base game where excitement never stops, I expected a better maximum exposure. However, it was a groovy trip down memory lane, and I enjoyed it immensely.
